This project provides the criminal courts with sentencing alternatives through the use of community service for offenders with sentences of adjournment in contemplation of dismissal, conditional discharge or probation. Offenders are required to make reparation for their crimes through performance of community service. The project monitors compliance with release conditions. Project operations also include offender selection, worksite selection, and oversight, court/probation notification activities, referrals to human service and management of accident/liability reports. The program was implemented in 1993.

This project provides all criminal court clients, initially unable to post bail, the opportunity to be interviewed to determine eligibility for release from jail. The interview process objectively assesses the defendant's qualifications for release on his/her own recognizance (ROR) or, where the court determines the risk of absconding to be greater, through release under supervision (RUS). Program operations include screening, eligibility determinations, monitoring functions, court notification of those who fail to satisfy release requirements, and substance abuse treatment/human service referrals as appropriate. Thisprogram began operation in 1985.

This is an agency of county government. Agency services include the preparation of pre-sentence investigations and reports for the criminal courts, the supervision of criminals sentenced to probation, and the investigation and supervision functions which are provided for criminals released from jail by the Local Conditional Release Commission. Intake, investigation and supervision services are provided for Family Court. Many discretionary services for pretrial and alternative sentencing are also provided. This county probation department participates in PINS (Person In Need of Supervision) Adjustment services programming.
